He painted Lee at Gettysburg, the victorious Union Army returning to Washington and the mounted cavalry of the 11th U.S. Cavalry. He attended the California College of Arts and Crafts and was a Navy corpsman in WW II. Stivers originals hang in the collections of the U.S. Cavalry Museum, the Fort Bliss Museum, the Army War College, and the Headquarters of the 1st Cavalry Division and the Pentagon as well as the living rooms of many Americans.
