Union colonel Hiram Berdan organized a battalion of sharpshooters in 1862 in the Peninsula Campaign. Consisting mainly of light Infantry they came into their own in 1863. Their victims were often high-ranking officers like Union Major General John Sedgwick and Confederate Brigadier General George Pierce Doles. Armed with long rifles snipers could hide in the woods and shoot long distances. They became part of both the Union and Confederate troops.
